Sunglasses, hotdogs, and mascots
CNIB sells shades and offers vision advice on May 29
If a sweet deal on sunglasses isn’t enough to draw a crowd, surely a mascot race will do the trick.
Or so hopes the CNIB, which is holding the fourth-annual Day of Engagement at its 1080 Portage Ave. location on Wed., May 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sunglass deal — $5 a pair or 5 pairs for $20 — is part of CNIB’s effort to promote vision health.
"People should be wearing sunglasses at all times when they’re out in the sun, even in the winter," said CNIB community giving manager Chris Glowach, adding their glasses provide 100% protection against UVA and UVB forms of radiation.
"Even children should be wearing sunglasses."
The event will include simulators that let people experience various forms of vision loss, as well as an obstacle course to be tried blindfolded with a white cane.
A portion of sales from a hotdog vendor will go towards the CNIB, and the agency’s mascot (a carrot named I.C. Clearly) will race other mascots.
Glowach said up to 75% of vision loss is treatable or preventable, and to that end optometrists will be on hand to answer questions from the public.
The annual event is put on "in conjunction with all the optometrists across Manitoba," Glowach said, "it’s a culmination of vision health month in May, which is CNIB’s month across Canada."
Activities will take place at the CNIB building, as well as in the green space across Portage Avenue next to the RCMP ‘D’ Division Headquarters.
Glowach said if people can’t make it to the event they can still partake of the sweet sunglass deal.
"The sunglasses are available year-round, so if they can’t make it that day they can still come down and purchase them for the same price."
