Tourney supports youth agency
You’ll want to bring your knee pads to this shinny tournament.
On Mon. Feb. 18, the Roblin Park Community Centre will play host to the second annual Shinny Hockey Tournament in support of Free The Children.
"Many people don’t realize there are kids having to walk to get water instead of going to school," said Coral Johnson, the 14-year-old organizing the contest.
Johnson, who plays goaltender for the Tuxedo bantam A2 squad, began the tournament last year as a community service project for school after attending a local WE Day event, sponsored by Free The Children.
Johnson raised more than $3,300 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation last year. She’s hoping to double that amount this year, with funds going directly to Free The Children, an international charity founded in 1995, which focuses on youth development across the world.
"I went to WE Day and thought it was really inspiring, so I decided to raise money for them," Johnson said, noting her Balmoral Hall School peers have volunteered at pet rescues or participated in community cleanups as their projects.
Johnson is looking for eight teams of 12 to 14 people to enter the contest. All ages are welcome. Registration is open to individuals or teams. Registration is $5 per person, and tax receipts will be issued for anyone donating $15 or more.
Teams will each play at least three half-hour games in the round robin style tournament. There are no prizes for winning — "other than the glory," Johnson said.
There will be a silent auction, featuring a WestJet flight package to anywhere the airline flies. Hot dogs and hamburger meals, including chips and a drink, will be sold for $3.
