If some Charleswood residents didn’t recognize the man running around for a full day in neon green runners — a lot more of know him now.
Scott Burton recently completed a 24-hour marathon to raise awareness of Charleswood not-for-profit organization Lunches With Love. His run was successful, raising thousands of dollars and food donations, and garnering attention for the organization, which relies on volunteers.
"I’m naturally a shy person," Burton says. "But it was magical — seeing all these people working together and showing support for Lunches With Love. It’s exciting, and a good feeling to see people with signs during the race, having people run alongside me."
The 24-hour run didn’t wreak as much havoc on Burton’s body as one might think.
"There wasn’t a point where I had to really push through with a lot of suffering," Burton says. "That gave me confidence."
So much, in fact, that Burton’s next challenge is a 72-hour marathon in Phoenix, Arizona.
Running for three days straight in a harsh desert climate might seem like hell to some people For Burton, it’s a way of pushing himself to mental and physical extremes —in a safe environment.
"I’ll be running in a one-mile gravel loop. There are no bears, no running out of water — I don’t have to worry about anything except moving one foot at a time."
The hot months of July and August are good training periods for Burton. Hehas tips for other runners who would like to train through the summer months, but might feel intimidated by the heat.
"The first thing is drink, drink, drink — once you think you’ve had enough, drink some more."
He recommends planning a summer running route so that you can fill up with water along the way.
"The duck pond at Assiniboine Park is a great place to fill up," he says. "I also bring a credit card with me to buy something in an emergency."
Burton also recommends the Harte Trail close to Wilkes Avenue as a great place for summer training. "Anytime except for midday, it’s almost all shade," he says.
If you’re looking for a race event to train for this summer, the Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon is accepting registrations and still has space for the 5 km and 10 km runs. It both begins and ends at Canadian Mennonite University at the corner of Grant and Shaftesbury in Charleswood.
