ValourCon brings models back to legion

4th annual contest, show and sale of all things modelling

The local chapter of the International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS) will be back at the Royal Canadian Legion St. James branch #4, 1755 Portage Ave., for the fourth time on April 27 for their annual scale model contest and sale.

Dubbed ValourCon 4, the event has drawn up to 150 models in previous years, and not just plastic models.

"They don’t have to be plastic… there’s resin, there’s cast metal. At one time it used to be 75% plastic content, but that’s gone long ago," said Valour Road IPMS Winnipeg board member Steve Curll, 71, who has modelled since he was 15.

Curll said the local IPMS chapter took the name of Valour Road as a way of "paying homage to the gentlemen, the Victoria Cross winners, that lived on Valour Road."

Contest categories this year include aircraft, ships, civil aviation, science fiction and fantasy, and dioramas. A special contest theme will be baby boom years (1945-65).

Entry fee is $10 for unlimited models for adults 17 and older and free for 16 and under.

Early registration and meet-and-greet runs from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26. On Saturday registration runs from 9 a.m. to noon, and then the show is open to the public until 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free. For more information go online to www.ipmswinnipeg.ca and click the gold medallion on the left-hand menu.
