Winnipeg School Division releases draft budget
Property tax hike for pilot project, math support
The Winnipeg School Division’s 2014-15 draft budget calls for a 3.6% property tax increase.
According to a release on the WSD website, taxes for a typical house in the WSD catchment area will increase by $3 per month (3.6%).
The draft budget also calls for a spending increase of 2%, or just over $4 million, from more than $175 million in 2013-14 to over $179 million in 2014-15.
School trustee Suzanne Hrynyk said the increase is partly due to the division’s plan to start up its pilot all-day kindergarten project to be taking place in four schools.
Hrynyk also said some of the money will go toward math supports.
"That’s something that parents and teachers and administration have been concerned about, so we’re putting some dollars into that," Hrynyk said.
The WSD had a public meeting on Feb. 24 to gather feedback, questions, and concerns from parents whose children go to school in the division.
People who have concerns about the budget had until Feb. 28 to submit their comments and questions for the trustees to consider.
Hrynyk and the other trustees have until the end of March 14 to submit their final decisions for the budget.
