Hecla Provincial Park is a hidden gem

We recently celebrated our 25th anniversary with my first visit to Hecla Resort. My anticipation grew with every online photo I viewed of the spa-style retreat.

But, the real excitement came as we entered Hecla Provincial Park via the narrow, man-made causeway.

Hecla is one of several islands along the shores of Lake Winnipeg that make up this provincial park, which has only been open to the public since 1975.

I have always been a fan of the Manitoba staycation experience but I wasn’t prepared for the beauty and serenity of this hidden oasis. I say hidden, because you have to travel two-and-a-quarter hours from Winnipeg to reach it, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

The water and stone decor at the resort is immediately relaxing, as is the heated mineral pool. The local ingredients, flavour and portions of food were delicious. Fortunately, burning off those calories was easy, as there are a variety of walking trails, piers and lighthouses in the vicinity.

My only regret is that I never tried one of those giant strawberry margaritas. Now I have something to look forward to on our next visit.

Now, it’s time to plug two local events:
• Zeta Tau Alpha sorority alumnae will distribute pink ribbons and breast cancer awareness cards at the Blue Bomber Think Pink game on Oct. 19. This is strictly an awareness campaign — no donations will be collected. Please take a ribbon for a family member. Go Blue!

• Kickstart your Christmas shopping with the second annual Vendors Fair on Sat., Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at St. James Anglican Church, 195 Collegiate St.

Entrance fee is a ‘tin for the bin’ or $2 in support of Winnipeg Harvest. There will be a canteen and a variety of vendors with jewelry, perogies, Norwex, Tupperware, purses, Regal, Party Lite gifts, Pampered Chef and much more. There will also be a table for the "Mission for Mexico," raising funds to build a library in Mexico for the underprivileged.

As we celebrate this season of Thanksgiving with family and friends, please take time to remember those less fortunate. We can all afford to give something — even if it’s just a smile.
