Old Metropolitan Theatre is new again
The old charm of the Metropolitan Theatre meets the excitement of our national winter sport as the refurbished Metropolitan Entertainment Centre presents Winnipeg Jets on a big screen, right across the street from MTS Centre on Donald Street.
The Metropolitan Theatre first opened its doors in 1919, during the glamorous era of live theatre and vaudeville. It became a movie house and remained so until it finally closed in 1987. Many Winnipeggers have fond memories of the old Met — perhaps you can recall a special movie or first date.
In 2012, the Canad Inns unveiled the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre.
The Met offers a perfect view of the game on its 35 x 26-foot screen, with a great sound system, great food and service — and much shorter washroom lines.
And when our Jets score, the fans at The Met are just as loud as those across the street. The Met offers casual seating as well as balcony booths for your special occasions (reservations are recommended).
For those of us without season tickets who still want to experience watching the game with other fans, The Met is the perfect solution.
The Met’s menu choices range from fine dining dishes, such as Atlantic salmon, Manitoba pickerel, P.E.I. mussels and red wine-braised short ribs, to more casual fare, such as burgers, pulled pork and chicken fingers. I personally recommend the maple salmon wrap, the spicy arrabbiata pasta, and the "to-die-for" blueberry walnut bread pudding with brown sugar caramel sauce and rum and raisin ice cream (it’s just as yummy as it sounds).
With an atmosphere that features chandelier lighting, original architecture, gourmet dining, silverware and actual towels in the washroom, you may forget that you’re there to watch a hockey game.
Of course, if you do have tickets to the game, you can still enjoy pre- and post-game snacks and drinks in the lounge or dining areas.
Now, if your taste does not run to sports, The Met also offers ‘dinner and a movie’ nights, which include a buffet dinner, popcorn and show for $35. You can even vote for your choice of movies in March.
And, if you really want a red carpet Oscars viewing experience, a party is planned for March 2, the night of the Academy Awards.

Whatever your choice, you’ll enjoy the charming atmosphere.
Of course, the best part of our evening was when the Jets won.
Go Jets go!
