Plenty for dad and kids to do in neighbourhood
As a new dad I’ve had a front row seat to many changes around my house.
There were some I expected like a decrease in sleep and increase in the amount of laundry! But what I didn’t anticipate that just as everything is new for my little guy I’m seeing things from a fresh perspective as well.
Becoming a parent has meant trying to be more in tune with the various activities and resources in the neighbourhood and surrounding area that might be fun to explore and check out.
While it seems as though most of the activities and advertising are geared at new moms, I thought it would be worthwhile to start gathering some ideas for things that new dads might enjoy without having to spend a fortune.
A starting point is your neighbourhood library. I’ve written in these pages in the past about the value a library brings to the community but I’m looking forward to rediscovering what they have to offer me as a parent.
A quick online search has already uncovered a variety of programming for all ages including "Baby Rhyme Time," which is designed to introduce a newborn to reading and books. Check out www.wpl.winnipeg.ca/library for more information.
No matter the time of year, Assiniboine Park is a can’t miss place to spend time. The recent redevelopment has reinvigorated the park – winter activities include an enlarged duck pond perfect for skating lessons to the ever popular toboggan hill where you can try out a new sled. Winter also means you need to warm up so why not make a pit stop for lunch in brand new Qualico Family Centre. And as this was being written the zoo was getting ready to introduce their newest arrival, an adorable 15-month old polar bear cub named Hudson who will become the star of the forthcoming Journey to Churchill exhibit.
Looking a little further into the future when the calendar flips over to summer and the temperatures soar, a visit to the brand new splash pad at Westdale Community Centre (600 Dale Blvd.) will be in order. Construction was completed in 2012 and it looks great with all sorts of spots for water to shoot out of. Did I mention there is also a pool just steps away?
There are countless adventures ahead and I’m looking forward to discovering what else there might be that is fresh and new in my neighbourhood. If you have ideas I’d love to hear them.
