Roula Alevizos hopes the new restaurant she manages, The Wood’s, will find a special place in the Charleswood community.
"I grew up in Charleswood," she says. "I enjoy interacting with the community, with hockey teams, and family events."
The Wood’s is a new restaurant at the corner of Roblin and Dale Boulevards—but the people behind it will be familiar to many Charleswood residents.
Alevizos formerly owned and managed the now-closed Cosmos, which was located on the corner of Roblin Boulevard and Harstone Road. Now she manages The Wood’s with help from her 19-year old daughter, Alleni, a university student.
One thing patrons won’t find on the menu are nut and seafood products.
"Allergies are a big thing for me," says Alevizos. "My daughter had a hard time growing up, and now she’s here under my wing. I’m showing her the ropes, so to speak."
The Wood’s features a traditional bistro-type menu. Menu choices include a mix of things like pizza, sandwiches, and salads.
The Wood’s isn’t just Cosmos with a different name, though. Alevizos has redesigned the entire concept of the restaurant, with a new focus. However, fans of the old Cosmos will still be able to find two key dishes on the menu: the Greek salad and chicken pita are being carried over.
A newly perfected artichoke dip is one of the dishes Alevizos prides herself on.
"The other night we sold five or six artichoke dips and every single person pulled me over to their table to say how much they enjoyed it."
"I want to concentrate on something small, ensure quality and supervise the food, while still being able to interact with guests," Alevizos says.
The Wood’s is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.
Alevizos estimates she works up to 78 hours a week at The Wood’s.
"The restaurant industry has always been my passion. I’ve literally grown up in the industry, and I can’t imagine anything else."
The dining room can seat 45 people, and an adjoining party room has space for up to 37.
Alevizos wants The Wood’s to become a part of Charleswood, and is happy that The Wood’s is allowing her family to continue a tradition now three generations old.
"My father’s in the back right now," she says. "I don’t think he knows what retirement is."
Alevizos’ father, Tom, owned Cosmos for 20 years before she took over ownership.
"As Cosmos, we’ve done lots of children’s christenings, weddings, parties" she says. "I want to continue that sort of thing."
