Vintage clothing store enjoys boom times

These days shopping for vintage and trendy items to create an interesting wardrobe is a passion many Winnipeggers pursue.

With business booming, Tracy Martin, owner of The Ruby Slipper Vintage Shoppe at 970 Sargent Ave., recently opened her second location at 370 St. Anne’s Road, near Havelock Avenue.

In 2004 she opened her first vintage and trendy women’s and men’s consignment clothing store on St. Mary’s Road.

"We had so much consignment walk in the door we had to find a larger location immediately. Our location at 970 Sargent Ave. fit the bill, but now we are so well found by all the fashionistas in town we need to expand and have been actively looking for a new location for awhile," she said of the new store which opened Oct. 20.

"Our second location is great! Really spacious and we can’t wait to see all the great fall and winter items the new area will bring in. This will give us a much wider catchment area encompassing St. Vital, Windsor Park, St. Boniface, Island Lakes and more of E.K and N.K as well.

"Lots of great old vintage fashions are just waiting to find a new home with us. We always have more customers waiting to see what is coming in. We love seeing what new treasures will walk in the door to us. (It’s) so much fun seeing the lovely old fashions and hearing the history behind them."

Besides clothing, the stores also stocks accessories such as jewelry, hats, scarves and shoes.
"I handle a lot of estates and downsizing and probably have the largest vintage and trendy stock in town," Martin said. "Many items in stock date from the 1940s to 1980s. I have many unique items."

Martin said a lot of her vintage clothes end up in film and theatre productions as well as at themed socials and costume parties.

Looking for something wonderful for your next costume party or theme event? Why not try The Ruby Slipper? You might just find something fun to wear. They are now taking fall/winter/ holiday consignment. If you are interested in finding out more you can visit Martin’s Facebook page The Ruby Slipper Vintage Shoppe or check out either of her stores in person.
