Building community through farmers’ market BBQ
Hello friends, with summer just around the corner, I’d like to invite you all out to a free barbecue at the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market on June 23, from noon to 3 p.m.
I’ve always loved a good barbecue. When I was a kid, my dad would get out a bag of charcoal and lighter fluid and we would patiently wait for the coals to heat up, so our hotdogs could be "just right." Now I’m looking forward to a summer of weekend get-togethers and cooking hot dogs on the barbecue for my family.
Last summer, the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market board graciously allowed me to hold a free community barbecue for St. Norbert on their site. As fate would have it, it started to rain. While setting up the bouncy castle and balloons in the rain, I was worried people wouldn’t enjoy the food and entertainment we had planned — but I had nothing to worry about. Over 300 people showed up to take in two live bands, the Winnipeg Police Service’s patrol horses, the fire department’s safety trailer, face painting, the Behavioural Health Foundation drummers and singing group and, of course, hot dogs, chips and drinks. And the bouncy castle, by the way, can handle an adult — I tried it.
This event brought the community together, and building up our community is why I ran for office in the first place.
As your representative, I want to be someone people can feel free to chat with, have a hot dog or coffee with, and also let me know their issues and concerns. I want to make St. Norbert the best possible place to live, work and raise a family.
So, I hope you can all join me on Sunday, June 23 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Farmers’ Market site, right across from my office at 3489 Pembina Hwy.
This will be a great opportunity for us to get to know each other and enjoy some good food and fun.
