Calgary Zoo animals escape flood, taking refuge in Winnipeg
Five new animals have found refuge at Assiniboine Park Zoo after escaping their flood-devastated home in Calgary.
Three cotton-top tamarins and two prehensile-tailed porcupines were living with 28 other animals in the aging South America building at the Calgary Zoo before it was damaged by the recent Bow River flooding that roared through Calgary last month.
"We’re very pleased to offer our support and help to the Calgary Zoo during this challenging time," said Gary Lunsford, general curator and acting director of zoological operations at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in a release. "In situations like this, it’s important that the zoo community joins together and it’s nice to see so many organizations doing just that."
The Great Vancouver Zoo has taken the amazon parrots, the Riverview zoo in Peterborough, Ont. has taken the sloths, and the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton, N.B. has taken in the giant anteaters and Hyacinth Macaws.
"This kind of heartfelt co-operation further emphasizes the importance of the relationships we have with other professional institutions and our zoo colleagues in North America," said Jaime Dorgan, general curator at the Calgary Zoo in a release. "It makes a very difficult time for the Calgary Zoo a little easier knowing that the animals that must move on will receive excellent care."
The Calgary Zoo is still on the search for new homes for the zoo’s spider monkeys, DeBrazza’s monkeys, and Andean condors.
Westjet, Cargojet, and Fedex have contacted with the zoo to help transport the animals to their new homes.
Cotton-top tamarins are one of the smallest breed of monkeys and the prehensile-tailed porcupine is one of several tree-dwelling porcupines. Both animals originate in Central and South America.
