Hey there, time traveller!

Now that summer is here, I’m really looking forward to meeting people on the doorstep.
To me, getting out on the doorstep is the best part of being an MLA. It allows me to hear what is happening in our community and it helps me be an effective voice for St. Norbert. For those of you who’ve met me, you know I’m a grassroots kind of person. Getting out on the doorstep energizes me to keep working for our neighbourhood.
When I was first working to become the MLA for St. Norbert, I spent all day walking door-to-door talking to people — in fact, I went through three pairs of running shoes. I prefer to talk to people in person whenever I can to really hear their opinions on an issue.
I’ve also had some interesting times while canvassing. Once, I noticed two young women on the street were noticeably upset. I asked them what was wrong, and they pointed to what I thought was a dog on the front steps of their house. It was in fact a large racoon!
The racoon was behaving strangely and wouldn’t let them into the house, so I grabbed an umbrella and an election sign out of my car and managed to wrangle the racoon back enough to get the young women safely inside. Then I suggested they call Animal Services at 311. Who says politics is boring?
I love face-to-face chats and getting to know people personally. Through my time on the doorstep I learned that many people were concerned about having enough child care.
We acted on that and now Bonnycastle School is getting 74 more child care spaces and the new school in Waverley West will have a 114-space child care facility. This is why I’m an MLA — to get to know the people of St. Norbert, to help make great things happen and to serve our community as best I can.
If I do not get the chance to see you on your door steps, please contact me with any concerns or even just to meet me and have a coffee.
Every week I try to attend as many evening meetings with schools or community groups as I can. If you have events or meetings that you would like me to be at, please contact my office and we will do our best to get there.
