Character chameleon in Nutcracker
Sarah Harris to play four roles in the RWB’s Christmas tradition
From a mouse, to flowers, to snowflakes, to a creature — Sarah Harris is a busy dancer during Nutcracker performances.
"We have quite a few quick changes," Harris, 18, said. "They are quite hectic, but it is satisfying at the end of the act to realize how many different scenes we’ve actually gone through."
Harris is in the aspirant program at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and is part of the ensemble cast of the famous Christmas tale.
"It’s exciting actually," said Harris. "It’s fun to feel like you are part of the entire ballet because at no point are we just sitting backstage waiting for our chance to go onstage.
"We’re really part of the entire story. I really enjoy it, we get to be onstage for the whole thing pretty much."
There are seven other girls and three boys performing in the ensemble, said the Linden Woods native, and they get to spend a lot of time together.
"We’re all really close," said Harris, who went to school with many of her castmates. "It’s like family, we’ve known each other for such a long time and we spend so much time together."
Rehearsals for Nutcracker began in September for Harris and she admits she was intimidated by the show.
"It was a lot to take in at the beginning of the year because I had never done any Nutcracker shows (with the company)," Harris said. "There was a lot of choreography to learn, but in the end I’ve learned so much and I think everyone has improved a lot."
Harris just graduated from the professional program and The University of Winnipeg Collegiate. The two-year aspirant program will help her transition from student to being employed in a company.
"I’d definitely love to have a job (at the RWB) one day," Harris said. "I think I’ll be doing some auditions, possibly next year with other companies, but I think I still need some time to think about things."
In addition to dance, Harris enjoys reading and spending time with her friends, but ballet is the main focus in her life.
"It’s been my focus for such a long time now," Harris said. "It’s really kind of amazing in my life."
