Churchill High program creating leaders
School is out for the summer and our students, teachers, parents, and administrators deserve to be congratulated for yet another year of hard work!
As a parent of three children, I know it’s a team effort to educate a child. My wife and I always deeply appreciated the efforts of school staff to help our children grow and develop.
What all parents soon realize, however, is that what our children do after school matters as much, and sometimes more, than what they do inside the classroom. That’s why I was thrilled to visit Collège Churchill High School to meet with students involved in the After School Leaders Program.
A new initiative of the Government of Manitoba, the program works with organizations and businesses, including the Winnipeg Jets Foundation, to give youth a chance to develop skills and professional relationships in a variety of fields including arts, communications and sports.
For nine weeks, a dozen Churchill High students got a chance to work with experts in film, dance, drama, storytelling, video production and more. The Hip Hop Studio at Graffiti Art Programming, Manitoba Storybook at Freeze Frame Media Arts Centre for Youth, HD Film Program at Manitoba Theatre for Young People (MTYP) and the Sacred Truth Program at Ka Ni Kanichihk all participated as mentor organizations.
They helped the students produce a range of creative projects, from autobiographical story videos, to short films, to hip hop dance routines. They got an opportunity to exhibit their work at a Final Showcase event held at MTYP on May 10, 2013.
At my meeting with Churchill High School’s After School Leaders I was impressed with their commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm. Given the opportunity to display their creativity and to collaborate with others, these young people not only proved themselves to be extraordinarily talented but true leaders in the truest sense of the term.
Programs like After School Leaders help us with one of our most critical challenges: investing in our youth and giving them the opportunity to excel. I thank these great community partners and dedicated Churchill staff for helping our students unlock their potential.
