Corydon-Osborne planning process back on track
The Corydon Village area is a vibrant and lovely place to call home. It is also an attractive destination for people from across the city and beyond to come to enjoy the restaurants, shops and to stroll along the avenue.
Change is underway in this neighbourhood as property values are high and there is a need to increase density in existing neighbourhoods to create a more sustainable city. Moreover, people want to live in Corydon and developers want to develop there.
The challenge is to ensure that new development is compatible with the existing neighbourhood.
I am a strong believer in good planning at the local neighbourhood level. Through an inclusive and thoughtful planning process, a vision for the area can be established with specific guidelines for development. The process itself can bring the community together including residents, businesses, and property owners to sit around a table and work on a collective vision.
In the end there are guidelines established which mean that developers know what has been generally agreed on in the community as appropriate in terms of scale and design. As we have seen in Osborne Village, where there already is a neighbourhood plan, there are fewer adversarial battles over new development and increased density is happening in areas where it makes sense to everyone.
While work on the Corydon-Osborne plan was stopped over one year ago, I am pleased to advise that the work on the plan will be beginning again very soon. We are bringing in expert planning support to carry out the planning process to completion. Please watch for announcements of public meetings and opportunities to participate in the coming months.
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for citizens to get engaged and participate in the planning. I expect there to be a wide range of ways to get involved, whether by attending workshops or through social media. We need to hear your voice!
The Corydon Village Residents Association is one of a number of community groups that has taken a great interest in local planning. For information about this group or to get involved you can contact the chair, Kerniel Aasland, at email@example.com or go to their website at www.corydonvillageresidents.org
I am looking forward to working with all stakeholders, residents and businesses to establish a plan for this wonderful, vibrant neighbourhood.
