Mix extreme biking, the darkness of night, live music, DJs, food, and what do you get? You get DarkCross.
Held at the Red River Co-op Speedway Aug. 7, DarkCross is a big outdoor party with bike races at its core, said race director Chris Huebner.
"The racing part is a discipline called cyclocross, which has you on and off your bike, on all sorts of terrain, running up stairs, hopping over barriers, and that sort of thing," said Huebner. "It’s a kind of high-energy, high-action intense form of racing within North America which is kind of exploding."
Aug. 7 was the third annual DarkCross at the Speedway and it did not disappoint.
"It was a great day," said Huebner. "Everyone I spoke to was beaming with excitement."
Huebner said 270 racers participated, with 500 spectators cheering them on.
Though the racing was important, the music and fireworks were a main component of the festivities.
"We’re trying to make this an event more than just a bike race," said Huebner. "I mean in the elite level race you’re going to see some fast, talented bike races but I think it’s also just a show."
The race course is laid out to ensure the action stays close to spectators, and at one point it even goes right through the crowd.
"We have a section that has been known as the Wallace and Wallace grandstand run up, where the course goes right through the grandstand," said Huebner. "So you’re actually running right between this sea of screaming cowbell-ringing fans."
