The Cash Store Financial Freedom Run for Diabetes Research on Sept. 2 is looking for more registrations and volunteers in Winnipeg, says the event’s race director.
"We’re looking for registrations and we’re looking for volunteers to be course marshals, to get involved with the entire morning," said Laurie Fischer, race director for the run at the Canadian Diabetes Association.
The Run for Diabetes at Assiniboine Park includes a half-marathon, 10-kilometre, five-kilometre, three-kilometre and a kids fun run.
"Everybody thinks it’s just a run," said Fischer. "But no it isn’t, we want to really encourage families to come out and have a nice walk in the park."
But the afternoon, of course, is about much more than a casual stroll.
"The whole key I think is that we’re really obviously focusing on spending time with family and friends on the long weekend while raising money for diabetes," said Fischer. "The money is earmarked to help the association lead the fight against diabetes. Helping people live healthy lives while we work to find a cure."
Last year the run raised $52,000 and Fischer said the goal is to always break the record.
"Everybody gets a medal," said Fischer. "It’s nice, if you complete your course you walk away and you feel proud about it. And that’s the whole thing."
