End of life talk hopes to start discussions

With assisted suicide dominating headlines, two local Fort Garry churches have decided to talk about it.

Fort Garry United and St. Paul’s Anglican have called in expert Arthur Schafer, professor of philosophy and director of applied ethics at the University of Manitoba, to speak at their churches 800 Point Rd. (Fort Garry) and 830 North Dr. (St. Paul’s).

"Today I would say there are more people living too long," said Schafer. "As one elderly person put it to me not so long ago, it’s a curse to live too long."

Schafer plans of referencing stories such as local Susan Griffith, and British Columbia resident Lee Carter.

Organizer Dianne Cooper hopes there will be debate, and in fact encourages it.

"I hope so," said Cooper. "(Schafer) invites the questions and invites the people to talk about them."

Cooper and other organizers are just hoping that no one comes alone to the public forum.

"This is just going to start you going," said Cooper. "Then you’ll go home and say ‘okay, what do we want to do.’"

The forum, open to the public, will be held Sun., April 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Paul's Anglican (830 North Dr.) for $10 per family.
