FRC makes top three in national high school challenge

  • Print

Students at Fort Richmond Collegiate are among the top three finalists in a competition to prove they’re undeniable.

In early October, the school entered into Under Armour’s Finding Undeniable challenge, a national competition searching for "Canada’s most undeniable high school." FRC was among 38 Canadian schools to enter, and the only Winnipeg-based school.

High schools across the country earned points by completing a series of challenges. Schools were ranked by the number of points they earned, and could earn points based on the votes they gained.

In early December, it was announced that FRC students had earned enough points to put them in the final faceoff round.

The winner of a prize of $100,000 for athletic programming will be the school which obtains the most public votes.

"Over the past few weeks, our efforts have garnered media attention, political and professional athlete endorsements," said FRC student council president Christopher Rampersad.

Rampersad said the toughest challenge the school faced was obtaining endorsement from political representatives, but the students managed to pull through.

"Due to a little luck, and a lot of direct appeals, we were invited to the Manitoba Legislative Building to receive a video-endorsement by the Progressive Conservative and NDP caucuses as they arrived for their meetings," he said.

Rampersad said the combination of the political endorsements, and the media coverage the school received as a result of those endorsements, gave FRC a 50,000 point bump overnight, which pushed it from fifth to first on the final day of the competition.

"It was incredible, unprecedented and it’s exactly why we deserve to win," he said.

Rampersad said the effort and involvement he’s seen from his fellow students during the course of the challenge is why FRC deserves to win the competition.

"We’ve never been more driven, we’ve never been more connected (as a school), and we’ve never been more determined to win (something)," he said.

"Not just for the prize, but to prove that our (school) spirit and our students are, in every way, undeniable."
