It’s springtime in Fort Rouge! The residents heralded the season with the annual Community Clean Up.

A large number of volunteers came out on a lovely Saturday morning and spruced up a large area around Osborne Village. Many folks stayed for the barbecue, as there is nothing like a hot dog after the hard work of picking up a full winter’s garbage!

I was very happy to organize this event again with Coun. Jenny Gerbasi, the Gas Station Theatre, Osborne Village Safeway, Osborne Village Starbucks, Take Pride Winnipeg, Osborne Village BIZ and the Oak Table Community Ministry. I would like to thank everyone for making this another successful cleanup.

In other news, soon wrecking crews will be busy getting ready for construction to begin on the new Mayfair Recreation Centre.  The public was invited to a community information session to learn about the design of the new centre and what to expect in the coming months. There is a lot of excitement about this project as it will provide much needed recreational opportunities in the neighbourhood.

The province and the city are investing over $2 million in the redevelopment and expansion of the Mayfair Recreation Centre.

Finally, the River Osborne Community Garden is celebrating its fifth successful year! I have been a proud supporter of this community initiative by the residents of Osborne Village and the River Osborne Community Centre (located at Confusion Corner) since its inception.

The garden contributes to local food security by offering individual garden plots to Osborne Village residents, as well as a native plant butterfly and herb garden that is enjoyed by all.

It has been wonderful to see this project building capacity within our neighbourhood, bringing together a diverse cross section of people working towards a common goal.

I’d like to extend a special thanks to co-ordinator Shauna Carmichael, community centre manager Andrew Davies, and all of the hard-working garden volunteers who have contributed to the ongoing success of the community garden. The project has been a very positive addition to our community.

In addition to growing vegetables, it has grown friendships and community spirit in our neighbourhood!  If anyone is interested in becoming involved, please email the coordinator at villagegarden@live.ca
