The Winnipeg Humane Society has gone mobile.
The Society has developed a new iPhone application that will allow Winnipeg to donate to the shelter, view adoptable pets, find dog parks and send e-postcards.
The user-friendly app was launched April 8 and was created because people started asking for it, said Aileen White, representative for the society.
"People seem to really like how easy it is to use," said White. "It’s simple, we didn’t put a lot of things (in it), and we just focused on a few really important things."
The app was funded by donations and grants, and the developers, Purple Forge, were very kind when billing, said White.
"There are organizations that want to help non-profits like ours and let us keep as accessible as possible in this day and age," said White.
Because the app is brand new, White doesn’t know how many people have uploaded it on to their phones, but the society has promoted it using radio commercials.
"A Red River (College) Communications student wrote it as part of her class project months ago, and she couldn’t believe we were actually using it now," said White. "It was so great to tell her, she was so touched."
Currently the app is only available for iPhones, said White, until there is more funding. The Humane Society plans to look into developing apps for Android and Blackberry phones in the future.
