Memory Walk team is en route to success
Stan Casar’s father Jozef was kind and sociable, but when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the early 1970s, his family watched him deteriorate and eventually pass away in 2011.
To honour him, Casar is participating in the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba’s Investors Group Memory Walk 2013 for the first time on June 13 at the Forks.
"Unfortunately when he passed away we sort of looked at all this and we’re not doctors, so not a whole lot that we could do from that end," said the Tuxedo resident, who works as a wealth advisor at
ScotiaMcLeod. "So we thought this is a good way to support some research and to support some funding to get rid of this disease."
The Memory Walk will start at 5 p.m. at the Scotiabank Stage. There is a new route this year for both the 3.5-kilometre and 5.5-kilometre walks.
On top of being part of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba’s fundraising committee, Casar is the vice-president of the Canadian-Slovenian Cultural Society, hence the name of his 41-member team, Team Slovenia. Casar estimates the team has raised close to $6,000 so far in funds.
"People have found it a worthwhile event… you get that sense of unity when you’re out there," said Casar.
He said his work with the Alzheimer Society has been a rewarding experience, one that led to the start of Team Slovenia.
"I’ve been there a couple years now, and I’ve seen all the wonderful things done by the society, so we thought we would put together a team to sort of extend that support, so that’s what we did," said Casar.
After Casar organized a team of just a few people, it started to grow beyond his expectations.
"The ball just started rolling," said Casar. "Then all of a sudden we had a lot of members outside of (the Canadian-Slovenian Cultural Society) coming in as well, joining our team, moving forward and raising funds. We found that that was great and we really appreciate that.
"We found that a lot of people have family or friends who were affected by this disease and we want to do something about it."
