A South Osborne resident worked to help out numerous non-profit organizations earlier this month.
The Handcraft Creative team, made up of North Kildonan residents Raymond Friesen and Troy Giesbrecht, and South Osborne’s Elbert Bakker, produced a video capturing what went on at Goodwork 2013, which was held on March 9.
The event, organized by Secret Handshake, an organization of creative professionals which meets monthly, brought together nearly 50 volunteers to do pro bono creative work for 14 United Way agencies. All told, 37 projects, ranging from redesigning business cards to revamping websites, were completed in the 7.5-hour day. Organizers valued the work at approximately $40,000.
Handcraft, which is located in West Kildonan at 1924A Main St., filmed the frenzy on March 9, and turned around a completed two-minute video by March 11. Handcraft is also in the fields of website design and mobile application creation.
"It was like Secret Handshake, but in a working atmosphere," said Friesen.
"When you have a clearly outlined deadline, it makes it like a fun marathon," added Giesbrecht.
To help speed up the work, the team filmed interviews right off the bat before taking B-roll, and then imported its footage to make sure everything was in place for a relatively simple edit.
"We turned it around in a couple days so it could be shared right away," said Bakker. "We had one guy importing and reviewing, so he could point out if we needed more details of what people were working on.
"We had prepared for it a little bit, so we got our soundtrack music beforehand and some motion graphics beforehand. We were ready to line it all up and edit."
Handcraft has worked with non-profit organizations before, producing videos for Siloam Mission.
Giesbrecht said getting professional creative work done is a low priority at most organizations as they focus on serving their clientele, but he said the exposure provides a great benefit.
"A lot of these non-profits don’t have any budgets for any sort of media," he said. "It doesn’t take much, just a day, to donate what is to them thousands and thousands of dollars."
"If you don’t look legit, then people don’t want to give you money," added Friesen, noting several not-for-profit organizations didn’t know where to turn. "Good design is more than just promoting. It gives your company a reputation."
Goodwork chair Leanne Schmidt was pleased with how the inaugural event went, as people skilled in advertising, marketing, design, and web design were all in attendance.
"The non-profits really had quite a few projects for us to do," she said. "Initially, we thought we’d do about five or four. We ended up tackling 35 projects, and I think it ended up being 37 – we just ended up tacking things one throughout the day because we had extra time.
