Oyate Tipi has a hit with furniture drive

Golf Dome hosting drive on May 5

When Sasha Scott left an abusive situation in her former home, she looked to Oyate Tipi Cumini to help rebuild her life and fill her new abode with furniture.

"Things you take for granted in your everyday life like a kitchen table are not sometimes the most important things when running," she said last week.

Scott is helping spread the word about Oyate Tipi’s upcoming call for gently used furniture. The North End organization is holding its eighth annual Fresh Start furniture drive at The Golf Dome, located at 1205 Wilkes Ave. on Sat., May 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Oyate Tipi helps women and their families get established in new homes by providing beds, tables, chairs, dishes and cribs.

Oyati director Millie Anderson stressed the organization does more than just act as a warehouse for extra or leftover furniture.

Anderson said the commonly needed furniture items include dressers, kitchen table sets, cribs, pots and pans, and small kitchen appliances. While the organization does not accept clothes, donations can be made nearby at the Up Shoppe at 384 Selkirk Ave.

"We have things that help in rebuilding a home — no-cost furniture and goods," she said.

Scott said she would encourage Winnipeggers to take their gently used furniture to The Golf Dome this weekend.

Individuals hoping to donate to the organization can schedule a free pick up by calling Oyate Tipi at 589-2265. Oyate Tipi is located at 606 Selkirk Ave.
