The Crescent Park Rescue (CPR) and volunteers came together to combat the invasive European buckthorn shrub.
On Sept. 28, 21 volunteers and members of the CPR took to the forest floor at Crescent Drive Park to pull out the stubborn plant.
"It spreads very readily by its seeds and its roots so it’s a very difficult plant to control," said Ron
Mazur, chair of the Crescent Park Rescue. "It has also been a particular problem in Assiniboine Park and we are the first group to try to deal with Crescent Drive Park."
The City of Winnipeg also helped with the project, said Mazur. The city provided visors and equipment, while CPR provided volunteers.
Mazur said the removal went so well the CPR scheduled a second one for Oct. 19 at 9 a.m.
Mazur also said the CPR has launched an online community survey. Community members are asked to answer what improvements, if any, they would like to be seen done at Crescent Drive Park.
