Play to portray serious issue with a dream of change
Two Osborne actors will play a variety of characters from prison guards to nasty boyfriends in Sarasvàti Productions’ new original play titled Jail Baby.
"We play so many characters if I tried to list them I’d probably forget them," said Megan McArton.
"It’s definitely a variety of characters, but all I know is I play all the male ones," joked Cory Wojcik.
Jail Baby, running May16 to 26 at the University of Winnipeg’s Asper Centre for Theatre and Film, located at 400 Colony St., is about the cycle of incarceration of women.
"So we started working on the play out of a desire to work with and tell the story of criminalized women," said Hope McIntyre, co-writer of the play with Cairn Moore. "We went into correctional institutions and did drama sessions with women, which was a chance for us both to give back and it gave us an opportunity to hear their stories and create the play based on that."
Though it is a serious topic, McIntyre says the women told them to make sure it was funny too.
"Because for a lot of these women it’s a survival tactic," said McIntyre. "They have to laugh, so we wanted to include that in the play to honour that."
McArton thinks there is a certain responsibility to represent the serious issue well.
"It’s something that you accept with the role and it’s actually a pleasure to do that and help get the message across," said McArton. "It’s fun and we’re learning a lot."
Wojcik feels, and McIntyre agrees, that a lot of pressure is on the two writers.
"The pressure for us is to take it off the page and making sure that we’re doing with clarity for ourselves," said Wojcik. "Hopefully representing what the playwrights are trying to put forth."
McArton said people will not only enjoy the show, but will be educated.
"It’s got very, very serious elements in it, but the message is one of hope."
