The Winnipeg Police Service has issued some crime prevention tips to help prevent carjacking.
In a recent news release, officials say most carjackings occur for the sole purpose of taking the car, and the crimes are without a political agenda and don’t target one specific demographic group of individuals.
Police advise the first step to help avoid a carjacking attempt is to stay alert at all times and be aware of your environment. The most likely places for carjackings are:
• High crime areas.
• Lesser-travelled roads, including those in rural areas.
• Intersections that require you to stop.
• Isolated areas in parking lots.
• Residential driveways and gates.
• Traffic jams or congested areas.
If you’re unable to avoid these areas, cops say you should take steps to prevent an attack. When stopped, use your rearview mirrors to remain aware of your surroundings, and keep your doors locked and your windows up. This will increase your safety and make it harder for an attacker to surprise you. Knowledge is your best defence in these situations, officials say.
