Put a spring in your step
River Heights-Fort Garry Ward Report
Spring is upon us — finally! It’s time to get outside and say "Hi" to your neighbours after a long winter.
I’m looking forward to tuning up my bike and spending more time outside in the sunshine in some of the beautiful parks with my family, and I hope you are too.
As City Councillor, I’ve worked to ensure that there are more recreational opportunities across River-Heights Fort Garry. We’ve replaced outdated play structures and I am particularly proud of the transformation of Joe Malone Park and the upgrades to the Corydon Community Centre’s Sir John Franklin site.
These spaces provide tennis, soccer, walking, gardening, play and have become very active places. I look forward to funding a major upgrade to Corydon Community Centre’s River Heights Site, Van Walleghem Park in Linden Woods and enhancing other parks throughout the Ward.
I will also keep building on partnerships between the City of Winnipeg and Schools to improve shared public spaces, including École Van Walleghem School, École Robert H Smith School, Queenston School and others.
Along with promoting green space, I’ve also been working to improve protection of our trees. Dutch Elm Disease continues to threaten our urban forest. I’ve successfully lobbied Council to increase funding to fight Dutch Elm Disease and increase the pruning cycle to deal with sick trees.
There are also opportunities for us to work together to beautify our neighbourhoods. Whether it’s getting together with a few neighbours to focus on cleaning up your block, doing some creative landscaping of your own, or participating in a community cleanup, you can get involved here:
- Take Pride Community Clean Up, "Team Up to Clean Up" at www.takepride.mb.ca/index.php?pid=55
- Adopt a Park at www.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/parksandfields/Parks/AdoptAPark.asp
You can get more information from my "Neighbourhood Updates" section on my website, www.orlikow.ca
It’s a great way to ensure you receive information that is most relevant to you.
As City Councillor, I believe in putting your interests first at City Hall. Follow me on Twitter or Facebook, call 204-986-5236 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with ideas, suggestions or concerns.
