Pylon trying out Grant Park during renovations
A locally-owned store is hoping to make it’s mark at Grant Park Shopping Centre.
Pylon, a pop culture store, is renting space next to October women’s clothing boutique until January when another business will take over the space.
Pylon owner Myke Stoel said he is hoping to eventually find another space in the mall for his business.
"We’ll have to see how Christmas plays out. We’re hoping that people will walk in here and find some gift ideas and then want to come back," he said.
Stoel said having a display window will help attract new customers to his store.
"People walk through the mall with a tunnel vision, you know. The window is important to tell people what they’re in for. I think especially in a mall that hasn’t changed a lot over the years, the window is important to get people’s attention," he said.
Grant Park general manager Sandra Hagenaars said while the mall is currently undergoing renovations, its commitment to showcasing local, independent retailers will not change.
"The only place to shop at Diva is Grant Park, the only place to get October is Grant Park. It’s different than any of the other malls in the city," she said.
Stoel said Pylon is a good fit with the mall’s commitment to showcasing local retailers.
"Looking at the mall, there’s nobody else doing what we do... We’re locally owned, and I think that’s a cool thing. It means the money you spend here is staying in Winnipeg, it’s not going to some big company in the states," he said.
Hagenaars said she hopes Pylon is successful at Grant Park during the next two months, and will end up remaining at the mall.
"A lot of our stores have started as temporary tenants with a month-to-month lease to test it out. Lorenza Fashion, for example, was a temporary tenant for years in one space — we ended up needing that space back, so we talked to them about becoming a permanent tenant," she said.
Hagenaars said the mall will continue renovations, including new floors and ceilings through the whole mall during 2013. On top of the renovations, Shoppers Drug Mart will expand by almost 5,000 square feet and plans to open a beauty boutique. Target will also be taking over the Zellers location, and other stores will either be moving to other locations in the mall.
