The Cause: Making the world a better place
The Actions and why:
Free The Children is an international charity and youth movement. This organization is important to us because it is one of the most youth-involved programs that allows us to help in ways that we know make a difference. There are many simple and effective ways to support this cause, as well as those that take a little more effort.
Under leadership of teacher Ms. Petryshyn, Sisler High schools student leaders Lauren Wittmann, Nathanael Meshesha, Lavon Edwards, Mary Roque, Jasmine Vargas and Justin Midwinter in the Free The Children group have held many different fundraisers to support Free the Children.
Some of our efforts have included snack sales during the lunch hour, collecting pennies for the We Create Change campaign, raffle draws and Water Rafiki friend chain sales.
One of our most successful snack sales was during the 10-minute intermission at one of our school’s musicals.
We also participated in Free the Children’s We Scare Hunger, collecting canned goods for our local food bank and We Are Silent campaign, pledging to go silent for 24 hours in support of basic human rights for children.
On May 2, we had a special visitor from Ottawa, Justin Trudeau, the leader of the Liberal Party. Our teacher Ms. Petryshyn presented Justin Trudeau two Rafiki chains for his children.
I hope our efforts help to create change for the future and that more youth will get involved in helping to create a world where all children are free and equal.
Youth and teachers who participated in Free the Children’s We Day Manitoba are writing regularly about how they are taking action and supporting local and global causes through the organization’s We Schools in Action year-long program. For more information, visit www.weday.com
