Registration open for annual Rotary Run
An organizer of the 2013 Fort Garry Rotary Club Half Marathon says it will be better than ever this year, with funds going to Winnipeg Harvest and Rotary programs.
This is the second year for the race, which will be held Sept. 22 and is called the Run to Stop Hunger.
"It’s a unique race for a couple of reasons," said Steve Gallagher, registration director. "Most races in the city are held out by the Wellington Crescent-Assiniboine Park area. This is one that is unique to South Winnipeg."
The race starts in St. Vital Park, goes through the University of Manitoba, down King’s Drive, Kilkenny Drive, and a turn-around on Cloutier Drive.
"It’s doesn’t have a lot of curves and bends, which is why the Canadian record is potentially on the line," said Gallagher. "It’s also a flat course like most courses here in Winnipeg."
The race offers a $5,000 Canadian record prize for those who beat Rob Watson’s time of 1:03:22 or Krista Duchene’s time of 1:10:52.
Winnipeg Harvest and Rotary programs, such as breakfasts for local schools, will benefit from the event.
"We picked Winnipeg Harvest obviously because it’s local, the Rotary in general, we kind of look for people or places in need," said Gallagher. "Because we are a new race, to align ourselves with such an established organization to give us some recognition off the bat isn’t a bad thing either. We do see the need in Winnipeg. Obviously there’s some poverty and issues right at home that need some effort and some concentration."
Gallagher says the Rotary’s dream for the race would be for it to become as popular as the Boston Marathon.
"Our long-term goal would be to make this the half marathon in the city of Winnipeg," said Gallagher. "We want to be like the Boston Marathon of half marathons, if you think about Canada we really want to make this a huge race in the future."
The early bird deadline to register closed July 31, but runners can register until Sept. 19 by visiting rotarymarathon.ca or any Running Room location in Winnipeg for $70.
Gallagher said more volunteers are welcome and can call Jarrett Davidson, co-director and volunteer co-ordinator at 204-294-2920.
