Saddling in the fight against cancer, raising funds
Now that fall is here and I look back on this summer, I think about the great things that have happened.
For those of you that don’t know, I love motorcycles. Both my fiancée Michelle and I have travel bikes and are motorcycle enthusiasts.
This summer we had a longer session in the legislature that went into September, so riding was limited to weekends and evenings that I was not on the doorstep or at an event. Some days during the summer, I even went from suit to saddle and rode to the legislature.
Furthermore, the past summer was also a great time for me to use my passion for riding to do some fundraising for the fight against cancer. My mother passed away in 2010 from a rare form of leukemia, and so raising funds to fight cancer is something I enjoy using my motorcycle to do.
I did the kickoff event for Ride for Dad, which raises funds and awareness for prostate cancer.
Unfortunately, I had conflicting events that day. I still registered and donated to this great cause, I just couldn’t ride in it. I encourage all men to get the free test done after consulting their family doctor.
The next ride I was able to fundraise for and to ride in was the Breast Cancer Pledge Ride, which started at the Assiniboia Downs and went out to Stonewall, Winnipeg Beach, Oakbank, and back to the Downs. I encourage all women to take advantage of the free testing. My team of friends raised hundreds of dollars to fight breast cancer and had a fun day together.
Now that fall is approaching, I will be changing the fluids, polishing our bikes, and then putting them away under cover until next year. I enjoy working with my hands and doing as much of my own work on the bikes as I can, and next year I’ll be out there fundraising again.
With the start of the school year, I hope to see you at parent council meetings in the evenings, and at events around the constituency. If you hear of a neighbourhood event, please contact me at 204-261-1794 and I will come out if I am able to.
Who knows? Maybe I will get to ride there one last time before the season is over.
