Soccer coach develops hearts and minds of youngsters
Winnipeg South End United (WSEU) U-14 Premier Developmental (PD) soccer coach Mike Reilly is a Fort Richmond resident with high and noble goals.
Under his watchful eyes in 2010, he led the U-11 soccer team to its first-ever triple-trophy year, winning the WSEU championship, the Children’s Hospital championship, and the WYSA (Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association) championship trophies all in the same year. In fact, the team did not lose a single game throughout that season.
But he says his passion is more than just winning soccer games.
"My goal is to develop the hearts and minds of these youngsters to become adults driven by good values of selflessness, teamwork, hard work, self-discipline, openness, and creativity," he said.
On a typical match day, Reilly will bark out orders to his players to put in their best, to work hard, and to be disciplined on the field of play. To Reilly, it is not all about winning, but about playing fair.
He believes a devoted heart and a sharpened mind will always soar over all obstacles. He has high hopes in the future of Winnipeg South End United (WSEU) soccer, with the current plan to develop soccer to the highest level.
He is passionately using soccer to help youngsters become lion-hearted in order to be the best. Reilly’s ultimate goal is to teach the boys that they can be whatever they set their minds to be: He wants them to become driven, resolute and ambitious adults.
Reilly has been living in Fort Richmond since 1978. Over the years, he has instilled the values of respect, courage, unity, interpersonal relationships and humility into his players. He previously served as an assistant coach to Brian Crane for three years.
