Students’ work an inspiration
Each year, I have the privilege of presenting Community Citizenship Awards to students from the River Heights area who demonstrate leadership in the community. These students lead by example and establish high standards for integrity and respect for community members.
The recipients of the awards this past June have been involved in a wide variety of activities helping others in the community.
Several have volunteered with Winnipeg Harvest, or the Christmas Cheer Board. Shelan Emre, a Grade 6 graduate of Robert H. Smith, is a member of the World Class Clown Association.
She volunteers at Christmas parties for inner-city children, fundraisers and the Children’s Wish Foundation. Her fellow student, Maks Byczkowsky, volunteered at the Manitoba Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Centre, and raised money to help provide clean water for African villages. Dominique Catellier from J.B. Mitchell has helped raise $1,000 for Crohn’s disease and Colitis and has also participated in the walk for Craig Street Cats.
Without exception, the award recipients were helpful at their schools in many forms — mentoring other students, serving on the yearbook committee and helping in community breakfasts. A Grade 8 graduate from River Heights, Christian Payette, is a role model demonstrating compassion and caring for others.
He was the "go-to" student for any teachers needing a helping hand. Joanna Kraemer from St. Ignatius often came in on her own time to serve on the winter camp committee and the Rockathon. Tinsley Claire Douglas from Kelvin High School was a key member of Kelvin’s peer tutoring program dedicating countless hours to the benefit of students at River Heights and Mulvey as well as new Canadians.
These students employ their skills and talents for the benefit of others — helping at Winnipeg Harvest, knitting clothing for donation to hospitals and villages in Turkey, coaching hockey for younger children and even running a successful baking business with 100% of the proceeds donated to the Save the Children charity.
