This Old House shines spotlight on Crescentwood

  • Print

Whenever people ask me why I like to live in Winnipeg, I always say "Because of all of our great neighbourhoods."

It’s true — we have some of the best neighbourhoods in Canada, and This Old House agrees. This Old House has identified Winnipeg’s very own Crescentwood neighbourhood as one of the 10 Best Old House Neighbourhoods in Canada on its website, thisoldhouse.com

This is something we should be proud of, especially as This Old House puts Crescentwood right up there with neighbourhoods like West Victoria, B.C., Saint-Roch, Quebec City, Que. and Inglewood in Calgary, Alta. All these neighbourhoods are valued for their historic character and one-of-a-kind period houses.

They are also valued by the people who live in them. As one of my own Crescentwood neighbours points out on the website, people put a lot of effort into restoring and maintaining homes in neighbourhoods like Crescentwood. This effort, carried on by generations of residents, has clearly paid off.

And it’s not just people’s private homes that show the results of this neighbourhood pride. For example, as This Old House points out in its profile of the neighbourhood, when Enderton Park required improvements about seven years ago, volunteers raised more than $250,000 to revitalize the area while still maintaining its historic charms.

Efforts like this one by dedicated volunteers and the City of Winnipeg to protect, maintain and revitalize our neighbourhood’s valuable green spaces are ongoing, and are possible because residents care about their neighbourhoods.

As you travel down the streets of Crescentwood, it’s obvious people are proud to live here. It’s this pride and respect that makes it so important that we maintain and enhance our older neighbourhoods such as Crescentwood, even as new suburbs are developed.

These older neighbourhoods are recognized internationally as a precious asset, and without them our city is diminished. That’s why I am dedicated to preserving and enhancing our city’s older neighbourhoods.

So give yourselves a hand, residents of Crescentwood. You’ve made our neighbourhood one of the best older neighbourhoods in Canada!
