UMSU polishes its green thumb
The University of Manitoba Students’ Union welcomes new Canadians with a green thumb.
The UMSU community garden welcomes students and the community to garden with them at the north corner of Pembina Highway and Chancellor Matheson Road.
"It’s run by students for students," said UMSU Campus Garden co-ordinator Tammy Junghans. "But we do allow others to garden with us. So we have students, faculty and a few community members who do garden with us."
The garden started a special side project on June 6 aimed at welcoming new immigrants to Winnipeg.
"We’ve got single moms from refugee camps that have come and gardened alongside us, and they bring their kids as well, so the kids are running around. It’s a great time," said Junghans.
USMU are looking for sponsors to raise money for multicoloured picnic tables in the garden.
"Project Picnic is they (immigrant families) come and they want to share their stories with each other, but all we have for an area like that is just an area with overgrown grass and rusty old chairs," said Junghans. "We so want to create a beautiful space where we can facilitate knowledge-sharing, workshops and things like that."
Currently, UMSU has 10 picnic tables but are aiming for five more to paint all the colours of the rainbow.
"We want to create a place and welcoming space for families to come, and we want it to be a place that they want to be."
Anyone can purchase a picnic table for $250.
"Their name will be on a little plaque that will be secured to the table," said Junghans. "We have had some faculty sponsors, we’ve actually had students pull out their wallets and (say) ‘I’ll do a table,’ and I was thinking they were going to do a portion of table, but no. These students at U of M are so generous and have been sponsoring entire tables."
