Volunteers needed for community tree planting
Who doesn’t love trees, digging holes, and soaking up the sun?
On May 25 the Crescent Park Rescue will be planting over 300 trees and they need the public’s help. The rescue is looking for volunteers to plant the potted trees and bare root saplings on the south side of Crescent Drive Park along the Red River in Fort Garry.
"The rescue has reached an agreement with the city to enhance the green space," said Ron Mazur, chair of the Crescent Park Rescue. "Our goal is to preserve, reclaim, improve and enhance the green space in Crescent Drive Park and golf course."
Local Scouts and Girl Guides will be among the planters, but some of them can’t stay long. Mazur said people should come volunteer because the park and golf course are special to the area.
"The park and golf course are hidden jewels in this neighbourhood but have not received enough attention," said Mazur. "People around here remember what the park used to be in its glory days, and we’d like to restore it."
Mazur wants as much of the community to come out and help with the planting as possible.
"We want families to come out and see what we are doing and participate," said Mazur. "That way they feel a sense of ownership, and I think to that end we’ve mounted an email campaign and a door-to-door drop-off (of) literature."
The literature being dropped door to door will tell residents the history of the park and encourage them to come out and plant the trees.
The cost of the trees was raised through the park rescue’s meetings.
"There was a meeting of 150 people and we asked for donations and we were overwhelmed," said Mazur.
Mazur said the planting could not be done without the help of the city’s naturalists.
"The city has embraced the park and wants to participate," said Mazur. "So we’re really pleased with that."
The planting on May 25 will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Refreshments and treats will be provided.
