Watch chef prepare your meal at BMC Market
I have no excuse. BMC Market has been selling Mexican foods at 722 Osborne St. for three years. For the past 10 months, however, BMC Market Mexicatessen has offered delicious homemade tacos and quesadillas prepared and served as they are in Central Mexico. My neighbours rave about this place, so I finally went in for dinner.
I ordered three tacos for $5 plus tax and watched as Beatriz Marivel Calderón-Villasenõr, known as Betty, rolled tortillas from corn flour dough that she had made, cooked the tortillas, filled them with chorizo, poblano peppers, chicken and more.
I said yes to cilantro and onion toppings and chose the spicy salsa, which Betty had made. Toppings do not include sour cream; this is authentic central Mexican cuisine.
"I make everything from scratch," said Calderón. "It takes time."
It is well worth the wait which wasn’t long at all. My tacos were flavourful and delicious and I want more!
Betty comes from Morelia, a city in Central Mexico. She makes her tortillas the way her grandmother made them when she was a little girl. "I saw my mom and grandma cooking," Calderón said. "I remember."
If she has a question regarding her recipes Betty picks up the phone to talk with her mother, mother-in-law or grandmother for some fine tuning advice. "I have to make adjustments to the recipes," Calderón said.
Calderón and her family lived in Salt Lake City before coming to Winnipeg. "It was cold, but not like here," said Betty. "I belong here now."
People in the South Osborne neighbourhood are the lucky recipients of Calderon’s authentic cuisine and Calderón is happy to have found this location.
"When I was looking for a store, I wanted this," Calderón said. "It was the place."
Put on a Mexican village frame of mind and chat when you enter the BMC Market. It is about more than grabbing dinner.
"I want to share my food and my culture," Calderón said.
