Whyte Ridge Community Centre is in urgent need of additional volunteers, club officials say.

Whyte Ridge president Jonathan Steinfeld said some programs might have to be cut if the centre isn’t able to drum up more volunteer support.

Steinfeld said the centre’s mini soccer program could cease to exist by next spring if additional volunteers aren’t found to help run it.

"Right now there’s a very good chance it won’t happen," he said.

Steinfeld said the lack of volunteer support has affected most programs at the club.

Over the summer, club officials tried to open up the community centre to the public, and needed volunteers to do so. When they couldn’t find the volunteer support, they created and advertised for a paid position, and only one person applied, Steinfeld said.

"One person… in an entire community with well over 1,500 families. That kind of summarizes the situation we’re in," he said.

Steinfeld said the lack of interest extends to beyond just the club’s volunteer base. He said the general interest in activities at the community centre has also declined.

Community centre officials have drawn up plans for an indoor field house. While the city has already approved the plans, Steinfeld said there hasn’t been any community support for the project.

He said the centre formed a committee to get the project started, but it currently has no members.

"We’ve put out the request for volunteers to come forward, and have not received any interest," Steinfeld said.

The community centre has created an online survey to gauge if there is community interest in constructing the field house.

"If the survey comes back and shows there is no interest, it’s a project we may not pursue," Steinfeld said.

The survey can be completed online at whyteridge.ca before the end of January.

In an effort to foster more community involvement and get more people on board, the centre has launched a search for a community slogan.

Steinfeld said the board put together a list of possible slogans on its website that people can vote for. Individuals are also encouraged to make their own suggestions.

"It has to be something that inspires people," Steinfeld said. "We just want to get people excited and interested again."

The centre hasn’t yet received much feedback in its search for a slogan, he added.

"We’re sort of in a waiting game to see if we can get (it) going further," Steinfeld said.
