This image, taken in July, shows construction of the new stadium is progressing.
Residents living near the future Winnipeg Blue Bombers stadium can help define the community’s role in overseeing event-day management of the facility.
A workshop is scheduled for Sat., Nov. 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Dalhousie School at 262 Dalhousie Dr.
"It’s fair to say there will be hiccups and bumps in the road — literally and figuratively — with issues and problems around parking and traffic," said Kevin Lunn, an area resident and working group member.
"But now people in the community can have involvement through representation on the committee."
The establishment of the Event Day Management Plan Stadium Advisory Committee was one of the conditions set by the city’s Riel community committee in July.
Lunn said the ultimate role of committee — which will include major stakeholders in the stadium project — will be to help with establishing event-day management plans for all future events at the stadium.
More immediately, Lunn said it’s important for individuals living in the surrounding area — Fort Richmond, University Heights, Waverley Heights and Fairfield Park — to share their thoughts and ideas at the Nov. 5 meeting.
"The workshop is an opportunity for residents to have a say in how the advisory committee can work for them in terms of addressing concerns related to events for the life of the stadium," Lunn said.
"The workshop will enable participants to be involved in an inclusive and receptive manner. This is a community workshop," he added, noting the workshop will include small groups focused on discussing the role, structure and function of the advisory group.
"It’s early days, so things still have to be worked out."
A city spokesperson confirmed the city will help co-facilitate the workshop, but didn’t organize the event.
"The city is providing some limited, logistical support to the community group holding the meeting," said Steve West, the city’s manager of corporate communications.
"Neither the City of Winnipeg nor the University of Manitoba or Winnipeg Blue Bombers are organizers of the public meeting."
