Make sure your trays are in the upright position because the Winnipeg Dreams Take Flight plane is almost ready for take-off.
On April 30, a plane full of lucky kids from Manitoba and Saskatchewan will be flying to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., for a day of rides, candy and, of course, hanging with Mickey Mouse.
The whole trip is supported by Air Canada employees and the Air Canada Foundation.
For the past three years, area resident and volunteer Viola Bauer has helped make sure the event is a huge success.
"As an Air Canada employee for over 14 years I wanted to get more involved... Dreams Take Flight brings such joy to kids who really deserve it, I was excited to help out," Viola said.
"I help raise money for the charity by throwing special events, including Dream Idol, a singing contest that has local celebrities belting out the tunes."
Children selected to enjoy the 24-hour world wind tour all have some sort of physical, mental, or social challenges. They come from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, are between 6 and 12 years old and would never have the opportunity to experience Walt Disney World without this program.
"To take them away from their everyday problems and let them be kids again, at the happiest place on earth, is an experience I wish everyone could have the pleasure of knowing," said Beverley Watson, Dreams Take Flight’s Winnipeg president.
The day has kids checking in at 3 a.m. for the five-hour flight.
"Even though it’s so early, the kids board the plane pumped full of energy," Bauer said.
Once they land the kids and volunteer chaperones enjoy a day in the Magic Kingdom, taking in everything possible. The group arrives back in Winnipeg at close to midnight. For more information and to lend your support to Dreams Take Flight, visit dreamstakeflight.ca or call 204-941-2727.
