Last-minute spring break suggestions

It is spring break! Here are a few activities your child/children may be interested in the last few days of this week.

Remember artist Andy Warhol and the Campbell’s Soup cans? On Thursday, March 28 at 2 p.m. the Osborne Library invites 9 to 12 year olds to unleash their inner Warhols on a soup can. The children will have a short lesson on popular art from the 1960s. They will then design, draw, paint and create their own soup cans.

To register your children for this activity phone Osborne Library at 204-986-4775 or visit the library in person and speak to a staff member.

Riverview Community Centre and Lord Roberts Community Centre are offering free skating for all and movie nights. This Friday at 7 p.m., Wreck-It Ralph is on the bill at Riverview. Popcorn is just a dollar and Wreck-It Ralph is a four-star movie!

For adults seeking relaxation, yoga classes resume at Riverview Community Club on Monday, April 2. Registered yoga teacher Amanda Pilloud teaches various postures in the hatha yoga style that will increase your flexibility and balance.

Even beyond spring break, some children and adults may be interested in polishing up their guitar skills or starting lessons from scratch. Fortunately, Winnipeg guitarist Tim Cummings has a home studio in Lord Roberts. Tim teaches electric, acoustic and bass guitar to students of all ages and abilities. He’s taught guitar for more than 40 years, including classes at Yamaha and for Winnipeg School Division. Since 1991, he has been teaching out of his home studio on Walker Avenue.

"My teaching approach is based on the students’ interests and needs," said Cummings.
If a student wants to learn popular and rock songs Cummings will oblige as well as teach students, "the principles and fundamentals that are common to all styles of music."

A jazz guitarist, Cummings liked listening to jazz as a child. When he began playing the guitar he says he "gravitated to jazz naturally," he says. He has played in the Pops series with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and in groups helmed by Ron Paley and Janice Finlay, to name a few.

If you’d like to hear Tim on the guitar, he will be playing with Brian Chipney at Resto Gare in June and July and at In Ferno’s Bistro in July and August. Further details on these dates and on guitar lessons are available his website: timcummingsguitarstudio.com.

I’m thinking of opening my dusty guitar case and playing a few notes before going to my next yoga class.
