In my opinion, Chris McDole and company run the best Winnipeg gym. Of course people’s opinions may vary, and everyone has a right to their own — but let me tell you what my opinion is based on.
Located at 181 Stradbrook Ave., near the junction of River Avenue and Main Street McDole’s Gym is in a central location with decent parking. Chris has recruited a crew of excellent, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly staff, such as head strength coach Dave Beakley, who has been working with Chris since the original McDole’s Gym opened several years ago, and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Matt Sheridan. These guys might look intimidating but you’ll be hard up to find a nicer bunch.
The equipment and machines are very new and are some of the best and smoothest I have ever used (this coming from a guy who has worked out in all kinds of gyms from a futuristic one in Taiwan, to an old-school ,Rocky style gym in Australia). They are equipped with strong-man competition equipment but ultimately they are very client friendly, catering to all shapes and sizes with dumbbells ranging from my mom’s five-pound, soup-can-sized weights to The Hulk’s 200 pounders.
The gym is clean and comfortable, with good heavy workout music and, to me, you can’t go wrong for an affordable price of $55 per month with no contract or sign-up fees. Being in a large warehouse setting gives the gym a lot of space, which limits wait-time for equipment and machines — that is until all of you muscle junkies read this and make your way down there to join!
I should also mention that the crew of trainers are all athletes themselves, having played various sports (but mostly football). Therefore they specialize in sport-specific training for groups or individuals.
