You don’t have to be in the tropics to swim

Some residents of the City of Winnipeg are able to vacation somewhere warm when the snow flies, but not all of us are able to get away from the winter weather.

That’s why many of us are thankful for a warm indoor pool a short distance from Waverley West at 685 Dalhousie Drive.

According to Trish Carter, pool supervisor at Margaret Grant Pool, "the average water temperature is 86 degrees", which can be very inviting when it is cold outside.

Although Margaret Grant is a little smaller than some of the other pools in the City of Winnipeg, it continues to offer many options for local residents.

Carter highlights the special events and weekly programs:

"Free swim is Friday, 8:10 -9:25 a.m.; youth swim is Friday, 7:30-9 p.m.; Loonie/Toonie Swims are Monday, 7:30-8:30 p.m., Tuesday 3-4 p.m., and Wednesday, 7:30-8:30 p.m.; Go swimming with Your Family is Sundays from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

"Another very popular program at Margaret Grant Pool are the Aquacise fitness drop-in classes.

These run Monday, Wednesday and Friday — Shallow Aquafit from 9:30-10:30 a.m., Shallow Aqualite from 10:30-11:30 a.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aqualite (Seniors) runs from 12:30-1:15 p.m. The Full Schedule can be viewed on line at www.winnipeg.ca."

The City of Winnipeg’s Winter Leisure Guide was published on Nov. 29, 2012, and registration for aquatics and recreation programs was held in early December. Most classes begin in early January, but if you missed the initial registration dates there may still be availability, or classes may have a waiting list to which you could be added.

If some classes in which you’re interested are unavailable this time around, choices such as the free swim or the youth swim might be ideal for you until the next registration period.
