Skatefest comes to Crescent Drive Park
On Sunday, Feb.17, Crescent Park Rescue (CPR) is inviting the community to an afternoon of winter festivities at Crescent Drive Park, located at the end of Crescent Drive in Fort Garry.
Planned activities include family skating on the new outdoor rink, tobogganing on the ice slide, a hockey shoot-out competition for girls and boys 12 and under, and figure skating demonstrations and coaching. The Century Figure Skating Club will provide the demonstrations and coaching for youth 14 years and under. Free hot chocolate and coffee will be provided for everyone.
The goal of the first Crescent Park Skatefest is to invite the neighbourhood out to enjoy Crescent Drive Park in the winter and at the same time, introduce the community to the new pleasure skating rink, put in place by the actions of Fort Rouge Fort Garry Councillor Jenny Gerbasi.
The driving force behind the first community Skatefest is a volunteer group of citizens called Crescent Park Rescue (CPR), a new organization whose goal is to preserve and enhance the green spaces in Crescent Drive Park, the neighbouring golf course, and surrounding area so that residents and visitors can fully benefit from and enjoy these resources. Some of the other projects that CPR is working on are the riverbank stabilization and reforestation of indigenous trees. CPR chair Ronald Mazur says, "The organization’s next major activity will be an extensive tree planting in May." CPR actively promotes the full use of the park and the recreation it has to offer in all seasons. "Our goal is to position Crescent Drive Park as a year round resource," says Mazur.
To contribute to the ongoing maintenance of the park and the accompanying recreational activities, CPR is inviting contributions from private and public stakeholders and is pleased with the support the city has extended.
In the fall, with Coun. Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry), MLA James Allum (Fort Garry-Riverview), and MP Joyce Bateman (Winnipeg South Centre) in attendance, CPR organized a fall fest in the park, which included a ceremonial tree planting. Mazur says it "signalled our intention to work in partnership with the city to preserve and enhance Crescent Drive Park."
