Southwest Winnipeg, a people and animal place
Families Forward, a Fort Rouge/River Heights Parent-Child Coalition, sponsored a captivating storyteller event on Jan. 27 at Grant Park Shopping Centre.
About 60 people attended this event. Children and parents got comfortable on mats and listened to three storytellers. Fort Rouge MLA Jennifer Howard, Winnipeg Free Press columnist Doug Speirs, and children’s entertainer Al Simmons each took their turn in the big chair, reading and telling stories to the children. I particularly liked Al Simmons’ face book.
Every child left the event with a book and a book bag.

On Feb. 15, children skated around and around the Earl Grey Community Centre hockey rink for five solid, cold minutes. They were raising money for new after-school programming, so every lap counted. The children had obtained pledges from people who lived or worked in the community.
"Back in December one of our younger community centre kids came to me and said that he would like to do a fundraiser for the club," said Sue-Ann Campbell, general manager of Earl Grey.
Campbell was referring to six-year-old Lisandro Spina, the youngest skater on the ice.
Proceeds from hot chocolate and cookies (with pink icing), made by some board members, were also going to the after-school program. A Valentine’s dance capped the fundraising event.

On Feb. 17 and 18 the Winnipeg Humane Society held a book, CD, DVD and VHS sale to raise money for the society and the many animals it shelters.
After walking around the WHS and seeing so many cats, dogs and bunnies in need a home, I wandered over to the book sale. It extended through several rooms and offered a large good quality, generously priced selection. I picked up a cookbook and Michael Ondaatje’s latest book, The Cat’s Table.
I am still thinking about one of the cats I visited that day.
