Club scrambling to find soccer convenors

  • Print

You won’t need a pair of cleats for this gig, but the Kirkfield Westwood Community Centre is looking for area residents who don’t mind playing a bit of hacky.

The club is looking to fill open soccer and mini-soccer convenor positions in time for registration in the first week of March.

If the club can’t fill the positions, at least 300 kids will have to be farmed out to other clubs, board member and publicity chair Tom Connon said.

"We want to keep them in KW," said Connon, who lives in Westwood.

The positions require a few hours of work each week setting up the soccer season, which begins sometime in April, depending on the weather, and runs until June.

Convenors are responsible for registration, placing kids on teams, and arranging for coaches and referees, Connon said.

The positions are filled on a volunteer basis and the club would be willing to split the duties across two or three people, Connon said.

Former convenors Ida Gigliotti and Rosie Oliviera will help establish the new convenors with their jobs, he added.

"Soccer’s a great team sport, it builds kids’ confidence through teamwork," Connon said.

The club is also looking to fill several other positions on its board, including vice-president facilities, ringette convenor, registrar and social convenor.

Those interested are asked to call club president Terry Wolowiec at 204-831-7986 or email president@kirkfieldwestwoodcc.ca.
