Do your part at recyclathon
Despite the late spring, I know that many people, myself included, are feeling the desire to spring clean after a long, cold winter.
And this month, there are a couple of opportunities to sustainably dispose of unwanted household items and divert them away from the landfill.
This weekend, May 11 and 12, the City of Winnipeg is holding its biannual Giveaway Weekend during which Winnipeggers are encouraged to give reusable unwanted household items — such as books, furniture, small appliances, toys, and clothing — a new home.
To participate, simply place items at the curb on your front street labelled "free" and remove any leftover items from the curb by dusk on Sun., May 12. Call 311 for more information.
Later this month, Old Kildonan will host Take Pride Winnipeg! Inc.’s recyclathon. The event aims to educate individuals about more sustainable ways to dispose of non-standard recyclable items rather than throwing them into the trash.
Individuals are also encouraged to bring their non-standard recyclable items, which are not accepted in the city’s regular curbside recycling program, to the event to properly dispose of them.
The recyclathon takes place Sat., May 25 in the Canadian Tire parking lot at the Garden City Shopping Centre, 2305 McPhillips Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Items that will be accepted include:
Beverage containers made of glass
Poly-coated juice containers
Computers and computer components
For more information and a complete list of items, visit www.takepride.mb.ca <http://www.takepride.mb.ca/>
These events are in addition to the city’s weekly curbside recycling program, which continues to grow as people recycle more, thereby increasingly divert waste from landfills. In fact, since the launch of the automated cart recycling program last fall, recycling volumes city-wide have increased between 18 and 20%.
I’m certainly setting aside items collected during the spring clean at my home to bring to the May 25 recyclathon and I hope to see you there too. I’ll also be volunteering at the event, so be sure to stop by and say hello!
I’d love to hear your ideas about other ways we can work together to keep Old Kildonan green and beautiful.
