Get your dancing shoes on
If you’ve ever wanted to be in the spotlight at Folklorama, your chance could be just a phone call away.
The German Society of Winnipeg, which has its offices on Flora Avenue and its clubhouse on Charles Street, is in the midst of a drive to recruit new dancers into its Heidschnucken youth dance group, for dancers ages five to 17 years.
The group performs at the society’s Folklorama pavilion every year, and new classes will be offered starting in mid-January. The drive for new recruits is part of a larger effort by dance instructor Alycia Magnusson to expand and improve the program.
"I have recently taken over the dance group... I’m really driven to make this dance group bigger and better than before," Magnusson said.
"It’s really shown already. We’ve had amazing compliments. People who’ve been in the club for years have told me this is the best the dancers have danced since the beginning."
Dancers who join the Heidschnucken troupe may also have an opportunity, later on, to join the club’s Neuschwanstein dance group, which performs throughout the year at events around Manitoba and occasionally in Ontario.
Magnusson said German dance can encompass a variety of styles, from celebratory routines to more interpretive ones meant to tell a story or mark an occasion. For a change of pace, the group also offers hip-hop dance classes.
Above all, the number one commitment dancers are expected to make is time, especially during Folklorama.
"For sure we do require the dancer is available for each show during Folklorama. It’s a week-long commitment every evening... which definitely seems rather daunting," Magnusson said.
"But the dancers get a free meal, and they get the whole week to hang out with each other, to play, to laugh and dance."
Practices will be held each Wednesday, after they start up mid-January, at the society’s building at 121 Charles St. To sign up, contact Magnusson at (204) 981-0782.
The group can also be found on Facebook by searching for "‘Heidschnucken Dancers."
